Been in my mind lately, trying to determine the best course of action. Felt my light dimming, no longer stable in my present reality. I don’t celebrate myself enough. I’m my own worst critic. Focusing on everything I lack, instead of basking in the joy of my strengths. Things needed to change, it all began with one decision. A shift in mindset.

Living in a fast-paced society that praises how much we accomplish daily. Where everyone is seemingly productive 24/7, but that’s a lie. We don’t share our struggles, or the down time. We paint a perfect picture, flawless with no quirks. Yet forget everyone else does this too. Then end up spiralling downwards into a black hole of comparison. We need to be kinder to ourselves, here are 4 reasons you need to celebrate yourself today.

As we’ve established, many of us are quick to focus on the negatives, things that need improving. A shift in mindset can allow us to see either an opportunity or lesson in every situation. Recently, I created a book of successes, where I document 3 things that went well for me on that day. By doing this daily, it helps increase my positivity, gratitude and mental health. It reminds me I’m capable of anything I set my mind to, and so are you.

An example of one of my entries is

  • I completed the I AM Challenge on Instagram
  • Finished listening to an audiobook that showed me great insight
  • Wrote 6 poems and started 3 blog posts

Celebrating yourself reminds you of all the wins, lessons and connections you’ve made. Making you comfortable in the arena of life, resulting in a boost of confidence, but it doesn’t happen overnight. Confidence is a practice that requires daily action. From writing down your successes, to positive affirmations to standing in the mirror, saying I’m remarkable.

Different things work for different people. I’m a visual learner, so I need prompts. My room is covered in quotes, inspirational figures and the goals I’m currently working towards. Seeing these things daily allow me to focus on what deserves my attention. Once my goal is achieved, it’s another reason to celebrate and up my confidence.

It Helps You To Compare Yourself Less

We’re all travelling our own path, battling different things yet compare like we’re on the same journey. We all want to get from A to B, become an expert in our field, make 7-figure deals. It is possible, but the timing isn’t the same as your friend, family or neighbour. You see them sky rocketing towards success, and wonder why that’s not happening to you. You overlook their sacrifices, the hours put in and all the rejections they never shared. By celebrating yourself, you remember your self-worth, everything you’ve accomplished so far. Be happy for their success and use it as added fuel to motivate yourself further.

When you feel yourself beginning to compare, take note and reflect instead. Rather than thinking how did she manage to work with a well-known brand, and feeling envious. Reflect on yourself and your personal brand.

  • Did you show interest with said brand?
  • Do both brand values align?
  • Is your quality of work set at a high standard?
  • Do you have a high engagement rate?
  • Would your audience be interested in this collaboration?

If the answer is no, then you have work to do to realign, or research what brands actually appeal to you. Understand your own priorities and how you can add value to both their audience and yours.

For example, don’t enter a networking event with the mindset of I need to make 5 connections. Instead think I’m going to enjoy myself and make one valuable connection. It’s quality over quantity. Those 5 connections will begin with small talk. Needing time and effort to dig deeper to leave a lasting impression. As you have a set goal in mind, you may be distracted and not learn anything from the experience.

  • I AM THOUGHTFUL because I can empathise with those around me.
  • I AM CREATIVE because I come up with new ideas daily.
  • I AM ENCOURAGING because I lift the spirits of those around me.
  • I AM CONFIDENT because I believe in myself and the work I create.
