During February, I’ve been exploring the notion of identity, through fashion photography with the participation of other creatives. It was refreshing to see Tolu Coker celebrating identity throughout her work by embracing dual heritage and cultures. Taking inspiration from her Nigerian roots and fusing it with the chaotic London lifestyle. The unisex brand is centred around inclusivity, diversity and social responsibility. Constantly exploring the fluidity of societies and cultures. Without a doubt, The Merit Award Winner was my favourite catwalk show from the first day of London Fashion Week. More than just a fashion label, serving as a creative outlet, encouraging personal expression through clothing. It brought an air of excitement to the rest of my week, wondering what other designers had in store.

Unlike a drop of water which loses its identity when it joins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. His life is independent. He is born not for the development of society alone, but for the development of his self.

The show itself was a vibe from beginning to end. Setting the scene with home videos before blessing the audience with hip-hop legend Notorious B.I.G. The models were having fun whilst walking down the runway, interacting with each other and the audience. Whilst simultaneously showcasing daring silhouettes, bold illustrative prints/embroideries and a playground of textures, all with a contemporary flair. The brand is a catalyst for acceptance and freedom in fashion. In addition to being a tool of encouragement to move towards more conscious consumer purchases. Investing in statement pieces that are timeless, sustainable, and ultimately reduce the individual’s carbon footprint. What are your thoughts on Tolu Coker’s designs?
