Today’s challenge practice confidence in real life.

We’re quick to overthink, talk ourselves out of opportunities, experiences and beautiful memories. I challenge you to believe in yourself, say yes to opportunities and put yourself out there. Don’t let the fear of rejection or doubt stop you from reaching your full potential. Before you can become confident in real life, you need to determine what’s limiting your progress. Are you self-sabotaging? Do you believe the negative self-talk? Perhaps it’s procrastination or imposter syndrome? Regardless of the limiting belief, it can be changed, and unlearned.

Procrastination

Procrastination stems from negative thoughts. Feeling anxious or stressed about a task can lead you to either avoid the situation or produce half-hearted results. Change the way you think and approach the task. How can this task add value to your life in a positive way? Write down the fears you’re having about the task and then challenge them.

  • (Fear) So many people have spoken about this topic already. (Challenge) No-one has my wisdom or story, I’ll bring a fresh perspective.
  • (Fear) What if I get rejected? (Challenge) But what if you succeed? Think about the possibilities if they accept your business idea. If your feelings are reciprocated or you get the promotion. It can only happen if you put yourself out there in the first place.

Negative self-talk

Ask yourself, would I ever speak to a friend like this? Then why do I allow this behaviour for myself? Negative self-talk kills more dreams than failure ever could. How you speak to yourself is important. Learn to forgive yourself for past mistakes, understand that they don’t define who you are. Let go of the power it holds over you by challenging your inner critic. You deserve the love and kindness you show to everyone else.

Self-sabotaging

For me, it was self-sabotaging. I would talk myself out of events and opportunities, especially if I had to go alone. Avoiding anything I wasn’t comfortable with, then wondering why my growth was stunted. Slowly, I began to change my mindset, to feel the fear and do it anyway.

Today I challenge you to do something alone. A stroll round the neighbourhood, picnic in the park, watch the sunset at the beach, dinner at your favourite restaurant. You need to spend quality time with yourself. Take time to reflect, enjoy your surroundings. As you begin to do this regularly, it will become second nature. You’ll no longer feel the need to rely on others to be your safety net. You already possess the magic you need, it’s time to unlock it and believe in yourself. Don’t let the fear of doing things alone, scare you away from your greatness.

What is it about doing something alone that frightens you? Being alone gives me time to be with my thoughts, they turn dark quickly (trauma). I can’t attend the event by myself, I’ll be the odd one out (social anxiety). The spotlight will be on me, who goes to a restaurant alone? (fear of rejection). You need to work on the root of the problem, rather than mask it with pretty colours and decorations. You don’t need to jump in at the deep end, take baby steps daily.

Trauma

If you’re always looking for an escape or in denial, it’s time to take ownership. Change your surroundings, have a picnic in the park. Then dedicate at least ten minutes, on journaling and reflections. Be completely present in the moment. Let your mind wander and write down your thoughts, regardless of what they may be. You’ll soon begin to see patterns. That’s when you’ll know what to work on. Speaking with a therapist is also a good idea, as they’ll bring a new perspective you didn’t think of. It isn’t easy to practice confidence in real life, but acknowledge the fear and do it anyway.

Social Anxiety

Attend a virtual event, or join in a zoom masterclass or workshop and network. The aim is to make one connection by the end of the event. Follow up with them after, whether it’s on social media, an e-mail or in person. Another baby step is putting yourself out there on social media. Create a video sharing one thing you’ve learned whilst on this confidence challenge. A cause you stand for, your favourite quote or something that inspired you today.

Rejection comes in many forms, pinpoint exactly what the fear is. An example could be getting rejected by a date.
