Practising Self-Love Despite The January Blues [AD]

Constantly being mentioned on social media, in real life and through our well-being. January blues seem to be the topic of the moment, but have you wondered, what’s the reason behind this feeling? Some common reasons are financial strains, the end of the holiday season with nothing to look forward to and even the bitter weather. A change of perspective is required in order to protect our peace. Take a moment for yourself, away from your daily worries. You don’t need to head to a fancy spa as self-care begins at home. I decided to share a few different ways I personally choose to unwind. Feel free to adopt a few of these ideas into your own routine. Be open-minded but remember that not everything that works for me may work for you.

Feel Refreshed (bathroom)

Enjoy the silence, clear your mind and actually take a moment to hear your thoughts, away from the daily noise and stresses. The bathroom brings a wave of freshness. An evening of relaxation typically begins with a facemask, filling the bathtub with bubble bath, bath salts and an occasional bath bomb. Create a relaxed ambience by lighting a few candles as bathroom lights are typically bright and ruin the experience. After you’ve soaked enough, rinse off and begin your skincare routine. I like to keep it simple. Moisturising my body with lotion or oil and wearing night cream or more recently rose water on my face as it soothes the skin.

Feel Luxurious (bedroom)

As you enter your safe sanctuary, otherwise known as your bedroom, take a moment to play your favourite song or playlist. You’ve enjoyed the company of your own thoughts through the silence in the bathroom, now it’s time to change gears. Reflect on why it’s your favourite, you may even learn something new about yourself. Sit and relax to slow R&B jams or dance around your room without a care in the world. The choice is yours.

With the music selection sorted it’s time to be boujee in my silk Hunkmöller* robe, that was kindly gifted to me. The material felt beautifully smooth gliding over my skin, the epitome of luxury, silk with lace trimmings. As comfort was at the forefront of my choices, I decided to get my robe in a size large and light shade. Oversized is my preferred choice of bedroom wear and I didn’t want an overpowering colour. Perfect for a girl’s night in, a holiday or a kind gift for Valentine’s Day. You don’t need to be in a relationship to enjoy the celebration of love, spoil your girls, mother or best friend with some silk.

Feel Warm and Serene (kitchen and living room)

The living room and kitchen go hand-in-hand when creating a feeling of warmth and serenity. Make yourself a hot drink, something that will make you feel cosy and warm inside on these cold winter evenings. I typically go for chai, mixing the spices to create a flavourful drink. Whilst in the kitchen, don’t forget to treat yourself, you’re worth it. Enjoy a cupcake or a piece of chocolate if you desire. Let the sweet taste consume you with happiness.

Then proceed into the living room, the cosy sofa with warm blankets just waiting for your arrival. Stay away from the screens and let your mind wander, you can watch How To Get Away With Murder later. Right now, let your mind work its creative muscle through a good book or an art journal. It’s all about creating the right environment, a relaxed ambience that suits you. I adore candles and incense so usually, one or the other are lit in the evenings. I personally find both calming, slowly consuming the air with their beautiful scents.

No matter where you decide to wander in your house, there’s something that will lift your spirits. If all else fails, turn up the volume and blast some pop classics from your speakers, wear bold red lipstick and dance around your bedroom. That’s what I did when taking the imagery for this blog post. My mood changed in an instant, I was feeling happier and pretty, as I acted like my goofy self without a care in the world. The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself, raw and exposed yet still so beautiful. What do you do to beat the January blues?
